Types of Physical and Motor Disabilities
Physical and motor disabilities limit movement of the hands, arms, legs, or other body parts. They include quadriplegia/tetraplegia, paraplegia, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, arthritis, Parkinson's disease, amputation, and repetitive strain injury (RSI).
The effects vary. Some users struggle with precise operations (clicking small buttons, dragging); some experience tremor causing unintended input; others have limited stamina, with fatigue building through long input sequences. Temporary impairments (a broken arm) and situational limitations (one hand holding a baby) benefit from the same design considerations.
Implications for digital interfaces: make click targets large enough (WCAG 2.5.8 Target Size, at least 24×24px), make time limits adjustable, and provide simple alternatives to complex gestures like dragging (WCAG 2.5.7).
Switch Access and Scanning
Switch access allows computer operation with one or a few buttons (switches). Items on screen are highlighted sequentially (scanning), and the user activates the switch when the desired item is highlighted. A switch can be operated by any movable body part — finger, head, knee, mouth, or an eye blink.
A sip-and-puff switch is operated by breathing (inhale/exhale) and is widely used by people with quadriplegia. Because scanning takes longer as the number of items grows, logical focus order and simple structure strongly determine efficiency for switch users.
Voice, Eye, and Head Control
Voice/speech recognition operates the computer through spoken commands. Dragon NaturallySpeaking is the leading product, and built-in OS voice control (Windows Voice Access, macOS Voice Control) has matured. It helps users who find typing or mouse use difficult.
Voice control users activate controls by speaking their visible labels. This is why WCAG 2.5.3 (Label in Name) — the visible label must be contained in the accessible name — directly serves this user group.
Eye tracking controls the cursor with eye movements; head tracking moves the pointer with head movements. Combined with on-screen keyboards and dwell clicking (fixating to click), they enable fully hands-free operation.
Keyboard Accessibility and Adaptive Hardware
Keyboard accessibility matters especially for motor disabilities. Many assistive technologies — switches, voice control, alternative keyboards — operate through the keyboard interface internally, so anything that can't be done with a keyboard can't be done with those technologies either. That is why WCAG 2.1.1 (Keyboard) is Level A.
Adaptive hardware includes large-key keyboards, keyguards (raised borders between keys that prevent stray presses for users with tremor), one-handed keyboards, trackballs and joystick mice, and foot switches. Also know OS software features: Sticky Keys, Filter Keys, and Mouse Keys.
